This snapshot was last updated Jun 16, 2026. ## Editor's note I'd been building projects with AI code editors for about a year and a half. Heading into July 2026, the thing I keep noticing is that they've all evolved into nearly flawless tools that look more and more alike, and the gap between them is closing fast as the underlying LLMs get better. The biggest differences now come down to the range of LLMs each one supports, speed, how quickly bugs get fixed, and pricing. For the last 8 months I've mostly worked in Claude Code, and now and then I switch to Visual Studio Code with the Kilo Code extension to run Xiaomi's MiMo model. Before that, I spent around 8 months on Windsurf, right up until the day they brought in weekly and daily usage limits. And before Windsurf, I was on Cursor. In between, I went through countless other code editors. In early 2025, Cursor was the most popular tool around, but for me Windsurf turned out to be the better choice on price and stability. Then, in early 2026, Claude made remarkable progress, and between the stability of its coding tool and its pricing advantage, I can honestly say I now work almost entirely in Claude Code.
